LOS ANGELES — Addis native John Foster’s remarkable journey on American Idol continues to gain momentum. On Sunday night, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter clinched a spot in the top 12, further solidifying his place as a fan favorite. On Monday, he secured a spot in the top 10!

Taking the stage in his signature cowboy hat and trusty guitar, Foster delivered a lively rendition of Elvis Presley’s 1957 classic “Jailhouse Rock.” With coaching from music legend James Taylor — a 2000 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee — Foster embraced a looser, more confident stage presence, even throwing in a few Elvis-style leg shakes without venturing into impersonation territory.
“That was such a great song choice,” Carrie Underwood praised. “You were having fun with it, you made it your own, and I feel like I was watching a young Dwight Yoakam up there.” Foster replied that he heard that a lot.
Foster’s ability to blend authenticity with charisma continues to set him apart. Since his emotional debut, performing the original song “Tell That Angel I Love Her” — written for his late best friend Maggie Dunn — Foster has captured not just votes, but hearts across the country.

On Monday night, Foster sang “I Told You So” by Randy Travis and Carrie Underwood, saying he wanted to say thank you to Underwood. Had she not asked him to sing a second song the first time, he said he may not be here today. During his performance, he walked up close to the judges and tipped his hat to Underwood.
