The father married his blind daughter to a “beggar,” but on their first night, when she touched his hand, everything began to change.
Isabela had never seen the world, but she felt its cruelty with every breath.

She was born blind into a family that worshipped beauty like a religion. Her two sisters were praised for their enchanting eyes and graceful figures, while Isabella was treated like a burden—a shameful secret hidden behind closed doors.

Her mother died when she was five years old. After that, her father changed. He became cold. Bitter. Cruel in a way that didn’t require him to raise his voice to hurt. He never called her by her name. He called her “it.”

She wasn’t allowed to sit at the table with the family. She couldn’t appear when there were visitors. To him, she was a curse.

And when she turned twenty-one, he made a decision that crushed what little was left of her heart.

One morning, he burst into her small room. Isabela was sitting calmly, her fingers tracing the braille pages of a book in Portuguese. Something fell into her lap. A piece of fabric.

“You’re getting married tomorrow,” he said coldly.

Isabela froze. Get married? To whom?

“With a beggar from the church,” he continued. “You’re blind. He’s poor. Perfect match.”

She wanted to protest. She wanted to scream. But fear tightened her throat.

The next day, the wedding took place quickly, in secret, as if everyone wanted to hide a mistake. She never saw his face, of course. No one described it. Her father pushed her forward and ordered her to hold the man’s arm. She obeyed like a shadow.

People were whispering and laughing.

“The blind woman and the beggar.”

After the ceremony, her father threw a small bag of clothes to her.

“Now that’s his problem,” he said, turning his back.

The man’s name was Rafael.

He guided her gently. He didn’t speak for a long time. Finally, they arrived at a simple cabin on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The air smelled of damp earth and smoke.

“It’s not much,” Rafael said softly. “But you’ll be safe here.”

Isabela sat on the floor, holding back tears.

But on that first night… something unexpected happened.

Rafael carefully prepared tea for her. He gave her the only blanket and slept near the door, like a guardian. And he did something even stranger—he spoke to her as if she mattered.

“What kind of stories do you like?”
“What are your dreams?”
“What food makes you smile?”

No one had ever asked that before.

Days turned into weeks.

Every morning, Rafael would take her to the river and describe everything like a poet. He would talk about the sunrise, the birds, the trees dancing in the wind.

He sang while they washed clothes. At night, he told stories about stars and distant lands.

For the first time in years… Isabela laughed.

His heart began to open.

And in that small place, something impossible happened.

Isabela fell in love.

One day, touching his hand, he asked:

“Have you always been a beggar?”

Rafael remained silent.

“Not always,” he replied in a low voice.

He said nothing more. She didn’t insist either.

Until the day she went to the market alone.

She memorized the way. But halfway there, someone grabbed her arm forcefully.

“Blind rat,” a voice mocked.

Isabela recognized him immediately.

Carla. Your sister.

“Is she still alive?” Carla mocked. “Still pretending to be a beggar’s wife?”

Isabela took a deep breath. “I am happy.”

Carla laughed.

“You don’t even know who he is.”

Then she whispered something that shattered Isabela’s world:

“He’s not a beggar, Isabela. You’ve been deceived.”

Isabela returned home trembling.

That night, when Rafael returned, she didn’t ask gently.

Tell me the truth. Who are you?

Rafael remained silent.

Then he knelt before her and held her hands—which were trembling.

“You shouldn’t know yet… but I can’t lie anymore.”

Her heart raced.

“Isabela… your father chose me because he thought it would destroy you. But he had no idea what this marriage would truly awaken.”

He took a deep breath.

“I don’t come from the streets. I come from a very powerful family in São Paulo. And when I saw what they did to you… I made a decision.”

“A decision… that will change everything.”
Part 2

A heavy silence fell between them.

Isabela felt her heart beating so strongly that it seemed to echo off the walls of the small cabin.

“A powerful family…?” her voice trembled. “So… it was all a lie?”

Rafael gently squeezed her hands.

“No. What I feel for you has never been a lie.”

She wanted to believe. But doubt burned inside her.

“Then why? Why pretend to be a beggar?”

Rafael took a few seconds before answering.

“Because I was running away.”

The word fell like a stone.

“My family controls companies, politicians… dangerous things. I discovered secrets I shouldn’t have known. Corruption, crimes… I refused to be a part of it. So… I disappeared.”

Isabela remained silent, absorbing every word.

“And when your father met me at church… he thought he was getting rid of you. But, for me… it was as if God had given me a purpose.”

Her breath caught in her throat.

“You are not a burden, Isabela. You never were.”

For the first time, someone was saying that truthfully.

Tears streamed down her face.

But before she could answer, a loud noise echoed from outside.

Steps.

Several.

Rafael tensed up immediately.

“They found me.”

The door was broken down.

Armed men invaded the cabin.

“It’s over, Rafael,” one of them said. “Your father wants you back.”

Isabela clung to him.

Rafael positioned himself in front of her.

“She has nothing to do with this.”

“Now you have it,” the man replied coldly.

In seconds, everything turned into chaos.

Rafael fought. He knocked one down. Then another. But there were many.

Isabela, in the midst of the darkness that had always been her world, felt everything — the sounds, the impacts, the heavy breathing, the danger.

Then… something inside her changed.

She couldn’t see.

But I could hear.

Every step. Every movement.

When one of the men advanced behind Rafael, she shouted:

“Caution to the left!”

Rafael reacted at the exact moment.

Another one came.

“BACK!”

He deviated.

It was as if, for the first time, she was seeing—not with her eyes, but with something deeper.

Together, they resisted.

But in the end… Rafael was overpowered.

The men restrained him.

“Take them both,” the leader ordered.

They were taken to a luxurious mansion in São Paulo.

The contrast with the cabin was stark.

Isabela could smell the wealth. The heavy silence of power.

Rafael was forced to kneel.

An older man approached.

“My son.”

The voice was cold. Controlled.

“You caused a lot of problems.”

He was Rafael’s father.

Isabela clenched her fists.

“He chose not to be like you,” she said.

The man chuckled lightly.

“And you must be the blind girl.”

He approached her.

“Do you know who you married?”

Isabela raised her chin.

“I know. With the only man who has ever treated me like a human being.”

Silence fell.

For a second… something changed in the air.

But the man soon hardened again.

“Take her away.”

Rafael shouted.

“No!”

But it was too late.

Days passed.

Isabela was trapped in a room.

But it wasn’t broken.

For the first time in her life… she had something to fight for.

And someone.

That night, a woman entered silently.

“I’m a doctor,” she whispered. “I was sent in secret.”

“By whom?”

“For someone who believes you can change everything.”

Isabel hesitated.

“There is a surgery,” the woman continued. “Risky. But it can restore your sight.”

The world stopped.

See?

She thought of Rafael.

“Do.”

The surgery took place in secret.

Hours… that felt like an eternity.

And then…

Light.

Weak. Painful. Confusing.

But there.

Isabela cried.

She could see.

Days later, she entered the mansion’s grand hall.

This time… with eyes open.

Rafael was there.

Injured. Arrested.

When he saw her…

It froze.

Isabella…?

She walked over to him.

Each step was firm.

“Now it’s my turn to fight for you.”

The men tried to fight back — but the police stormed the place.

The doctor had reported everything.

Corruption. Crimes. Evidence.

The empire fell in a single night.

Rafael’s father was taken away in handcuffs.

And, for the first time…

Power was lost.

Months later…

The sun was shining over Rio de Janeiro.

Isabela was standing by the sea.

The wind touched his face.

And this time…

She could see everything.

The colors. The sky. The world.

Rafael approached from behind.

“So… is it as you imagined?”

She smiled, with tears in her eyes.

“It’s prettier.”

She turned to him.

“But nothing… is more beautiful than what you taught me to feel.”

He held her hand.

“You saved me too.”

Isabela took a deep breath.

Free.

Strong.

Loved.

And, for the first time in his life…

complete.
