The silence in the room became heavy.

Eduardo could barely breathe.

In front of him, under the dim light of the lamp, Isabella stood with her blouse open… and on her skin there was no sign of pregnancy.

No scars.
No signs of having had children.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Eduardo blinked several times, confused.

For months I had heard the same story: Isabella, the maid with three children by three different men.

But what was in front of me did not match that story.

“Isabella…” he finally murmured. “Where are the scars?”

She closed her eyes, as if she had been waiting for that question her whole life.

His hands were trembling.

“Because…” she whispered, “I’ve never had children.”

Eduardo’s heart leaped violently.

-That?

Isabella lowered her gaze.

—Mateo, Chucho and Lupita… are not my children.

Silence filled the room again.

Eduardo tried to organize his thoughts.

—So… why does everyone think so?

Isabella took a few seconds to respond.

When he spoke, his voice sounded broken.

—Because it was easier to let everyone believe it.

Eduardo frowned.

-Explain to me.

Isabella took a deep breath and sat on the edge of the bed.

Her eyes were shining with tears.

—Five years ago… I lived in a small town in the state of Puebla.

—My older sister, Maria, had three young children. Mateo was six years old, Chucho was four… and Lupita was just two.

Eduardo listened in silence.

“My sister’s husband was a violent man,” Isabella continued. “He drank, he hit people… and one day he just disappeared.”

Isabella’s voice broke.

—My sister fell ill shortly afterwards. Very seriously ill.

Eduardo felt a knot in his chest.

—Before he died… he asked me for something.

Isabella looked up.

—He asked me to take care of his children.

Tears began to roll down her face.

—I was twenty years old… I had no money… no job… no future.

—But I promised them I would never abandon them.

Eduardo understood then.

—That’s why you send your salary.

Isabella nodded.

—Everything I earn goes to them. For their school, their food… their clothes.

—They live with a neighbor from the village who takes care of them while I work here.

Eduardo remained silent.

For years, the town had invented a cruel story.

But the truth was completely different.

Isabella was not an irresponsible woman.

She was a woman who had sacrificed her youth to fulfill a promise.

—So… —Eduardo said gently— why didn’t you ever clarify it?

Isabella smiled sadly.

—Because when I arrived here, the rumors had already started.

—People said that I had three children by different men.

—If I tried to explain it… nobody believed me.

—So I stopped fighting.

Her eyes filled with pain.

—Besides… if they thought they were my children… at least no one would be looking for them.

Eduardo felt a deep respect growing within him.

But then Isabella added something else.

Something that changed everything again.

—But there’s another reason why I was afraid to marry you.

Eduardo looked at her attentively.

-Which?

Isabella clasped her hands.

—Because if you married me… they would also be your responsibility.

—Three children who are not yours.

—Three lives that depend entirely on me.

The room fell silent.

For a few seconds, Eduardo said nothing.

He just walked slowly towards the window.

He gazed into the darkness of the garden.

He thought about the teasing from his friends.

He thought about his mother’s fury.

She thought about the scandal that her marriage had already caused.

Then he remembered something else.

Nights in the hospital.

Isabella’s warm hand holding his.

His soft voice telling her that everything would be alright.

Then he turned around.

Her eyes were full of determination.

He walked towards Isabella.

And he took her hands.

—Isabella… look at me.

She looked up in fear.

—You thought I married you without knowing what it entailed.

Eduardo smiled calmly.

—But you were wrong.

Isabella frowned.

-What do you mean?

Eduardo took a deep breath.

—Two weeks ago… I sent someone to your town.

Isabella remained motionless.

-That?

—I wanted to know the truth.

Isabella’s heart began to beat strongly.

—And… what did you discover?

Eduardo smiled gently.

—I discovered three wonderful children.

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

—Mateo wants to be an engineer.

—Chucho dreams of having a football team.

—And Lupita… —Eduardo laughed softly— Lupita says she wants a big house with lots of dogs.

Isabella could no longer hold back her tears.

—You met them…

Eduardo nodded.

—And I also made a decision.

He bowed down in front of her.

—I’ll go get them tomorrow.

Isabella looked at him in disbelief.

-That?

—This estate is too big for just two people.

—I think three more children would make it perfect.

Isabella’s tears fell without stopping.

—Eduardo… you don’t have to do this.

He gently squeezed her hands.

—No.

—I want to do it.

—Because when I said in church that you and your children would be my world…

—I was serious.

Isabella hugged him tightly.

And for the first time in many years…

He felt that the weight of his promise was no longer solely on his shoulders.

Three days later, a black car entered the small town of Puebla.

When Mateo, Chucho, and Lupita saw Isabella get out of the car…

They ran towards her shouting with joy.

And behind her, Eduardo Vargas was smiling.

Because the richest man in the region had just discovered something his money had never been able to buy.

A real family.
