The silence that no one wanted to hear
—“If you don’t finish everything, you’re not leaving this room. Nobody’s going to listen to you.”
The girl lowered her gaze.
Her small hands trembled around a cold plate of boiled vegetables and watery porridge that smelled bad. The steam had long since dissipated. Everything was cold… just like the air inside that old warehouse.
The silence was dense, humid, almost alive.

The girl couldn’t scream.
She couldn’t defend herself with words.
She could only obey… and wait.
Tears trickled slowly down her cheeks, but not even the sound of a sob broke the silence.
The woman in front of her sighed impatiently.
—I told you to eat it all. Why are you so difficult?
The girl tried to lift the spoon again. Her hands were too small and trembled so much that some of the porridge fell back to the floor.
The woman’s eyes hardened.
“Perfect,” he said with a cold smile. “Now you’ll have to pick that up too.”
What that woman didn’t know…
was that someone would return home earlier than expected that night.
And that door that had been secretly closing for months…
was finally going to open.
Emiliano Cárdenas ‘ black car stopped in front of the house with a soft creaking sound on the cobblestones.
It was almost seven in the evening.
She had returned a day earlier than planned. The business trip to Monterrey had been canceled ahead of schedule, and for the first time in months she decided not to give any notice.
She wanted to surprise her daughter.
When he got out of the car, he looked up at the enormous white house that dominated the street.
She was beautiful.
Too perfect.
But something wasn’t right.
The house was… too quiet.
Emiliano closed the car door and walked towards the entrance with a frown.
Usually, when he returned from a trip, Camila knew before he even walked through the door. She didn’t know how he did it. Maybe she heard the car. Maybe she just felt it.
He always appeared running down the hallway.
She didn’t speak—she had never spoken—but her enormous eyes lit up when she saw him.
Then he would awkwardly hug him.
And that hug always reminded her how much she was missing out on.
But that afternoon…
Nothing.
Emiliano opened the front door.
—Camila?
Her voice echoed in the marble lobby.
He knew she wouldn’t respond with words, but he usually heard her footsteps or saw her small figure appear from some corner.
There were no steps taken.
There were no drawings lying on the floor.
There were no dolls.
There were no signs that a girl lived there.
Only silence.
A strange silence.
Disturbing.
Emiliano placed his briefcase on the console and slowly walked down the corridor.
—Renata?
There was no response either.
Then he heard something.
A voice.
It was coming from the back of the garden.
A high-pitched voice… dry… harsh.
He recognized her immediately.
Renata Beltrán.
His wife.
But that tone…
It wasn’t the elegant tone she used at gala dinners.
It wasn’t the sweet voice she showed in front of the neighbors.
It was a cold voice.
Cutting.
—You eat it all. Not a single spoonful is left. Do you understand?
Emiliano stopped dead in his tracks.
A shiver ran down his spine.
He walked silently towards the kitchen.
The back door was ajar.
From there he heard her again.
—If you don’t finish it… you’ll stay here all night.
Emiliano’s heart began to beat strongly.
The old tool shed was at the back of the garden.
It wasn’t a place where Camila should be.
Never.
He slowly descended the stone steps.
Each step seemed to weigh more.
The shed door was closed.
But the voice kept coming from within.
“Do you think your father has time for you?” Renata said scornfully. “He doesn’t even notice when you disappear.”
Emiliano’s chest tightened.
He pushed the door.
The smell hit him first.
Humidity.
Old wood.
Stale food.
Then he saw the scene.
Camila was sitting on the floor.
Curled up.
With knees against chest.
He had a plate in his hand.
Food scraps were scattered on the floor.
Her eyes were red and swollen.
She didn’t cry with a sound—she never could.
But her whole body screamed fear.
Renata was standing in front of her.
Perfectly dressed in a burgundy suit.
Impeccable hair.
The elegant posture.
Pointing at the girl with his finger.
“Now pick everything up,” he ordered. “And then you can eat it.”
Emiliano’s world seemed to stop.
—What’s going on here?
The voice came out lower than I expected.
Renata turned slowly.
For a second… her face lost its color.
—Emiliano…
Camila raised her head.
When she saw her father in the doorway, her eyes opened with a mixture of surprise… and something else.
Hope.
But he didn’t move.
She did not run towards him.
He just looked at it.
As if she wasn’t sure that it was real.
Emiliano entered the shed.
Each step made the wooden floor creak.
“I asked you a question,” he said, his voice hardening.
Renata got her perfect smile back.
“I was teaching her discipline,” he replied calmly. “Camila is… picky about food.”
Emiliano looked at the plate.
Then he looked at his daughter.
His hands were dirty.
Her knees had red marks.
And there was a small bruise on her wrist.
Something inside him broke.
He crouched down in front of Camila.
-Come here.
The girl hesitated for a second.
Then she threw herself towards him in a desperate embrace.
Her small fingers clung to her jacket as if she were afraid it would disappear.
Emiliano felt his shirt getting wet with silent tears.
He stroked her hair.
Then he looked up at Renata.
And in his eyes there was no longer any confusion.
There was something much more dangerous.
“Let’s talk,” he said slowly.
But Renata didn’t seem worried.
On the contrary.
A small smile appeared on her face.
—Of course —he replied—. But first you should know something.
Emiliano frowned.
-What thing?
Renata crossed her arms.
And he said something that made her blood run cold.
—That this… is just a small part of what really happens when you’re not at home.
Camila trembled in his arms.
And at that moment…
Emiliano understood that what he had just discovered was only the beginning .
