The fog descended thickly on the cemetery in the mountains of Chihuahua, enveloping the gravestones in an almost unreal silence. At that hour—past two in the morning—not even the dogs barked. Only the dry, rhythmic sound of a shovel digging into the earth.
“Did you hear that?” Mateo whispered, squeezing the flashlight.
“Shut up…” replied Tomás. “It’s coming from over there.”
They both advanced with uncertain steps among the tombs, guided by the noise. The beam of light trembled in their hands until they finally found it.
A female figure.
Slender, covered in a dark coat, digging with an almost desperate urgency. Her breathing was ragged. Her hands, dirty. Her gaze… completely lost in what she was doing.

“What the hell are you doing?!” Mateo shouted.
The girl remained motionless.
Slowly, she turned her head toward them. Her eyes shone, not with fear… but with determination.
“Don’t come any closer,” he said in a low but firm voice.
Tomás took a step back.
—She’s crazy… she’s digging up a corpse.
Mateo swallowed.
Who are you? This is illegal!
She didn’t answer immediately. She plunged the shovel in harder, as if time were running out.
“They don’t understand…” he murmured.
The sound of the wood creaking.
The coffin.
Mateo felt a chill run down his spine.
—Stop right now or I’ll call the police!
The girl lifted the lid partially, just enough to reach inside. Her fingers trembled as they searched for something in the shadows.
So-
He took out an object.
Small. Metallic. Covered in dirt.
And at that precise moment, the lights of a pickup truck illuminated the cemetery from the entrance.
The girl paled.
“They arrived sooner than I thought…” she whispered.
Mateo frowned.
-Who is it?
But she didn’t answer.
Instead, he clutched the object to his chest… and ran straight into the darkness, disappearing into the mist.
The engine noise stopped.
The doors of the truck opened.
And out of it came… men who were not in uniform.
Thomas whispered, almost voiceless:
—Mateo… I think this… is not what it seems.
The tomb was left open.
The coffin… too.
And inside—
Something wasn’t where it should have been.
The silence that remained after the girl’s escape was heavier than the fog.
Matthew and Thomas did not move.
The men who got out of the truck walked forward with purposeful steps, as if they already knew exactly where to go. They weren’t in a hurry… but they weren’t uncertain either.
—Turn off the flashlight—whispered Thomas.
Too late.
“You,” said one of the men, pointing at them. “What are you doing here?”
Mateo tried to speak, but no sound came out.
Another man walked past them without even looking at them and stopped in front of the open grave. He bent down. He looked at the coffin. Then he lifted the lid completely.
A second of silence.
Then, his expression changed.
“They opened it,” she said quietly.
“No…” another replied. “She opened it.”
Mateo frowned.
“We didn’t do anything, I swear,” he managed to say. “That girl… she was looking for something.”
The man stared at him.
—And did you find it?
Matthew doubted.
That brief moment was enough.
The man barely smiled.
—Then we have a problem.
Thomas took a step back.
—Listen… we don’t want any trouble…
“They’re already in one,” another interrupted.
The wind lifted the fog enough to reveal the inside of the coffin.
Mateo couldn’t help but look.
And then he understood.
The corpse was… too clean.
There were no signs of advanced decomposition for the time he had been buried. His clothes were intact. His face… almost perfectly preserved.
But that wasn’t what froze him.
It was the chest.
It had been opened.
And closed again.
“What… is this…?” he whispered.
The men exchanged glances.
One of them pulled out a gun.
—They didn’t see anything.
Tomás felt his legs giving way.
—Matthew…
But before anyone else could speak, a noise cut through the air.
A shot.
Not towards them.
But towards one of the men.
The impact knocked him down instantly.
“What the hell?!” shouted another.
From the fog, the girl reappeared.
He was breathing heavily. His hands were still trembling, but now he was holding the metal object… and a weapon.
“That’s enough,” he said.
The man who seemed to be leading them narrowed his eyes.
—You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.
“Oh, yes, I know,” she replied, moving forward slowly. “I’ve been following them for months.”
Matthew and Thomas looked at each other, completely lost.
“Who are you…?” Mateo asked.
The girl didn’t take her eyes off the men.
—Someone who didn’t let them bury the truth.
He picked up the object.
Now, under the light of the headlights, it was clearly distinguishable.
A small device.
A tape recorder.
“It’s all here,” he said. “The fake autopsies. The altered bodies. The names.”
The leader smiled, but there was tension in his face.
—Do you think getting out of here alive is that easy?
The girl did not respond.
He just pressed the button.
A voice began to play on the recorder.
—“…proceed with the extraction before burial. No one should notice the intervention…”
The silence exploded.
Even the fog seemed to stop.
Mateo felt his heart pounding in his chest.
Tomás was barely breathing.
The men… no longer smiled.
And in the distance—
Mermaids.
First weak.
Then, getting closer and closer.
The girl exhaled, as if she could finally release the weight she was carrying.
—This time… they did arrive on time.
The leader took a step back.
For the first time… he hesitated.
—This doesn’t end here.
“No,” she replied. “This is just the beginning.”
The red and blue lights broke the darkness of the cemetery.
The men tried to flee.
They didn’t get far.
Mateo and Tomás were pulled aside by the officers, still in shock, as everything descended into chaos with orders, handcuffs, and incredulous stares.
The girl remained still.
He wasn’t running anymore.
She was no longer trembling.
An officer approached her.
—We need you to put your weapon down.
She did it without resistance.
Then he extended the recorder.
—Everything is here.
The officer took her carefully.
—Your name?
She hesitated for a second.
As if that detail no longer mattered as much as before.
—Lucía Reyes.
The name was left hanging in the air.
As something that could finally exist without fear.
Days later, the story came to light.
It was no ordinary grave.
She was one of many.
Bodies altered to conceal crimes.
Evidence buried along with the victims.
But someone… didn’t allow it.
Matthew and Thomas testified.
The recordings confirmed everything.
And Lucia—
He disappeared.
Not in the fog.
But in the silence that follows when a truth, at last, ceases to be persecuted.
Weeks later, the cemetery was calm again.
The wind swept across the gravestones as if nothing had happened.
But one tomb… was no longer closed.
She had been officially exhumed.
Investigated.
And corrected.
Someone left flowers on it.
Mateo stared at them in silence.
“Do you think he’ll come back?” asked Thomas.
Matthew shook his head.
-No.
He paused.
—But you don’t have to.
The wind blew gently.
As if, for the first time… he wasn’t hiding anything.
Because some truths, once unearthed…
They are no longer buried.
End.
