The tension was palpable. The restaurant, which just seconds before had been filled with laughter and clinking glasses, had transformed into a graveyard. No one was eating. No one was breathing.

The millionaire, a man accustomed to the world obeying his whims, was red with fury. The veins in his neck looked about to burst. “Security!” he roared, his voice rattling the crockery. “Get this animal out of here right now!”

Two enormous guards appeared out of nowhere and walked straight toward the homeless man. He smelled of stale rain, and his shoes were taped shut. But his dignity remained intact. He didn’t back down an inch. He kept his eyes fixed on the girl in the wheelchair, the millionaire’s daughter.

She was trembling. Her hands gripped the armrests so tightly her knuckles were white. “Don’t touch him,” she said, her voice barely a whisper.

Her father looked at her in panic. —“Daughter, don’t talk nonsense. This man is crazy. He’s dangerous.”

The vagrant smiled sadly. “I’m not dangerous, Lucia,” he said, pronouncing her name with a familiarity that chilled everyone to the bone. “Don’t you remember my voice?”

The guards grabbed the homeless man to throw him out. It seemed the poor man would be tossed into the alley and dinner would go on. But then, the homeless man did something desperate.

With a sudden movement, he broke free, reached into his threadbare coat, and pulled out something small that glimmered in the light. He held it up in the air like a trophy. The girl in the wheelchair let out a heart-wrenching scream. What the homeless man held in his hand changed history forever.
