“I know that boy,” the beggar told the policewoman at the police station… There’s a secret that’s been going on for decades…
Can you imagine going into a police station just to use the bathroom… and leaving with a secret buried for twenty-seven years?
The storm streaked across the Curitiba sky when Davi, 63, pushed open the glass door with his shoulder. The plastic bag in his hands trembled, and not just from the cold. The rookie guard tried to stop him, but Inspector Nogueira, tired and compassionate, murmured: “Leave him alone. He’s not asking for anything. He just wants dignity.”
David walked down the corridor, invisible as always… until an entire wall seemed to scream his name. A new mural, red at the top: “UNANSWERED CASES”. Children’s faces, dates, broken promises. He searched without knowing what, and then stopped. Third row. A boy with amber eyes and a dimple in his chin. The caption read: “Enzo Duarte, disappeared on 04/22/1999, 4 years old”.
The bag fell. An old brush, a wet notebook, a piece of soap. Nogueira ran over. “Davi, are you alright?” And the phrase escaped, harsh and definitive: “I know that boy.”
Detective Helena Brandão emerged from the room, her gaze sharp and her voice low. “How do you know him?” Davi swallowed hard. “He… he became my brother. I named him Lucas.” Helena didn’t blink. “Then you’re going to tell me everything. From the beginning. No embellishments.”
In 1999, Davi was a mechanic in Joinville. He had a sister, Bruna, who was deep into drugs and trapped with a dangerous man, Renato. One early morning, Bruna knocked on the door with a child in her arms. The boy was dirty, with bruises and eyes that didn’t know how to trust. “He’s mine,” she lied. Davi knew it was impossible… but the boy was trembling with hunger. And there, in that instant, he chose to protect before understanding.
Days later, Bruna returned crying. Renato had been found dead. “I’m going to disappear. Stay with him,” she pleaded. Davi forged documents, moved to Cuiabá, and invented a past. Lucas grew up among workshops and notebooks, laughing loudly when he felt safe. At night, he would sometimes wake up calling “Mommy,” and Davi would sing any melody just so the silence wouldn’t win.
Until fate exacted a heavy price. Lucas won a scholarship, dreamed of engineering… and, at 18, a motorcycle accident erased everything. Davi collapsed, lost his job, lost his footing, became homeless. The world forgot him, alone, until that mural.
Helena assembled a team and found an old wiretap: “We caught the rich kid.” Bruna died years later in prison. DNA from the exhumed body confirmed: Lucas was Enzo.
When Helena told the truth, David trembled. It wasn’t relief; it was fear. Fear of handcuffs, of hatred, of being remembered only as an accomplice. But the policewoman whispered: “Today we close a cycle. Don’t run away from here, David.”
In the private room, the parents, Sílvia and Mauro Duarte, stared at Davi as if facing the impossible. He showed them a photo: Lucas smiling with his math medal. Sílvia cried first. Mauro took a deep breath. “Was he loved?” Davi answered, without hesitation: “Every day.”
Months later, the judge assigned community service and supervision. And, for the first time in a long time, Davi finally left the courthouse with an album around his neck and a simple room waiting for him. It wasn’t perfect forgiveness. It was truth. And, for a family, that was finally light.
“If you believe that no pain is greater than God’s promise, comment: I BELIEVE! And also tell us: which city are you watching us from?”
