Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, has issued a recall for about 46,000 trucks at risk of a trim panel detaching. Per the NHTSA and Tesla, the recall is for 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and February 2025
NHTSA wrote on its website for the recall that the “detached panel can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash”
According to a report filed by the NHTSA on March 18, issues surrounding the stainless steel panel were first raised in January 2025 before Tesla decided to “voluntarily recall the affected vehicles” on March 11
Nearly all Cybertrucks produced by Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, have been recalled.
According to the company and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), roughly 46,000 trucks are at risk of a trim panel detaching. Per the NHTSA and Tesla, the recall is for 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks that were manufactured between November 2023 and February 2025.
“Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on certain model year 2024 and 2025 Cybertruck vehicles to replace the cantrail assembly with a cantrail assembly that meets durability testing requirements,” the company wrote on its website, noting that if the stainless steel panel of “the cantrail panel separates from the vehicle while in drive, it could create a road hazard for following motorists and increase the risk of injury or a collision.”

Both NHTSA and Tesla have provided consumers with links and additional contact information to confirm if their Cybertruck is part of the recall.

According to a report filed by the NHTSA on March 18, issues surrounding the stainless steel panel were first raised in January 2025 before Tesla decided to “voluntarily recall the affected vehicles” on March 11.
The latest recall marks the eighth for Cybertrucks since January 2024, the New York Times and USA Today reported, while the Times noted that this is one of the vehicle’s largest recalls in its short time being available on the consumer market.
The recall also comes amid a tumultuous time for Musk, 53, in the press. Earlier this month, the entrepreneur-turned-presidential advisor to Donald Trump saw his net worth drop by more than $144 billion as Tesla’s stock prices fell by more than 15% since October.
According to experts, Musk’s newfound political entanglements have had a negative effect on Tesla. In addition to serving as CEO of the company, Musk currently heads the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to modernize “federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity,” according to a presidential executive order.
“Instead of focusing on Tesla’s innovation and growth, he has become a polarizing figure, alienating key international markets where political sentiment plays a major role in consumer perception and decisions,” Abigail Wright, a consultant at the business advisory firm Chamber of Commerce, told Newsweek.

Additionally, Tesla has been facing ongoing boycotts and protests, with Trump, 78, speaking out to defend Musk and his company. On March 11, the president shared a message on the Truth Social platform that he was backing his advisor by buying a Tesla vehicle.
“Elon Musk is ‘putting it on the line’ in order to help our Nation,” Trump wrote, adding later, “I’m going to buy a brand new Tesla tomorrow morning as a show of confidence and support for Elon Musk, a truly great American.”
According to the Associated Press, Trump shopped for a vehicle on the White House driveway and later “told reporters that he would write a check for the car, which retails for roughly $80,000, and leave it at the White House so his staff can drive it.”
Beyond Tesla and the White House, Musk has seen his family drama become headlines, with his estranged daughter speaking out against him for his anti-transgender comments. Meanwhile, Ashley St. Clair and him have clashed over custody and financial support for their baby son, who is one of 14 children Musk has with four different women, including the singer Grimes.
