An eight-year-old girl appeared in court as her mother’s lawyer. No one expected her words to change everything forever…

Lucía Esperanza Morales was just eight years old when she decided she would become her own mother’s defender. Not because she had seen it on television, nor because someone had suggested it to her.
She made the decision that Monday morning, October 15th, while eating cereal at the kitchen table and hearing her mother crying in the bathroom for the third time that week. Carmen Morales came out with red eyes, trying to smile so her daughter wouldn’t worry. But Lucía had already learned to read the signs: when her mother took a long time in the bathroom, when she spoke in a low voice on the phone, when she put important documents in a shoebox under the bed… something bad was happening.
“Mommy, why are you sad again?” asked Lucía, putting her spoon down on her plate. Her hair was styled in two pigtails perfectly done by Carmen, and her school uniform was clean and ironed. Despite everything, her mother never allowed Lucía to leave the house looking disheveled.
“I’m not sad, my love,” Carmen lied, leaning in to kiss his forehead. “I just have a bit of a headache. Come on, or you’ll be late for school.”
But Lucía wasn’t just any ordinary girl. From a very young age, she had displayed an intelligence that surprised her teachers and, in some ways, worried her mother. Not because being intelligent was a bad thing, but because Lucía saw things that a girl her age shouldn’t understand. She overheard adult conversations, noticed family tensions, and had an almost photographic memory: she remembered every detail of important things.
That same morning, after Carmen dropped her off at school, Lucía couldn’t concentrate in any of her classes. At recess, instead of playing with her friends, she sat under the mango tree in the schoolyard, thinking. She had heard her father yelling on the phone the night before. She had seen her mother hiding papers. She knew they hadn’t slept in the same room for two months.
“Lucía, why don’t you come play?” her best friend, Isabela, asked her as the others jumped rope.
“I’m thinking,” Lucía replied with the seriousness of an adult. “My mom is having some problems, and I have to help her.
” “What kind of problems?
” “Grown-up problems. But I’m going to solve them.”
The girls laughed, thinking Lucía was playing at being grown-up, but it wasn’t a game. In her eight-year-old mind, a plan was already forming. If her mother had legal problems, she needed a lawyer. And if they couldn’t afford one… then she would be her lawyer.
That afternoon, when Carmen picked her up from school, Lucía started asking her questions.
“Mommy, what does a lawyer do?”
Carmen looked at her in surprise as they walked toward the bus stop.
“Why do you ask that, my love?”
“Out of curiosity.”
“Well… a lawyer helps people when they have problems with the law, when they need to defend themselves in court, or when they want their rights to be respected.
” “And how do you become a lawyer?
” “You have to study a lot, many years at university. It’s difficult, my love.”
Lucia nodded silently. She was already planning how to study to become a lawyer as soon as possible.
That night, after dinner, while her mother was washing the dishes, Lucía went to Carmen’s room. She knew the important papers were in the shoebox under the bed. Although she knew she shouldn’t meddle in adult matters, she felt she had to understand what was happening. Very carefully, she took the box out and opened it.
Inside, she found documents she didn’t fully understand, but some words stood out: custody, divorce, hearing, family court . There was also a letter from a lawyer addressed to her mother, stating that she had to appear at a hearing the following Friday.
Lucia’s heart started beating very fast. Her father wanted to take custody away from her mother. That meant they wanted to separate them.
She quickly memorized everything: the name of the court, the date of the hearing, the name of her father’s lawyer. Then she put everything back exactly as she had found it. When Carmen entered the room, she found her sitting on the edge of the bed, with a very serious expression.
“What are you doing here, my love? Shouldn’t you be doing your homework?
” “Mommy, Dad wants to take custody of you.”
Carmen felt as if the air were being taken from her body.
“What do you know about it, Lucía?”
“I know you have a hearing on Friday. I know Dad has a lawyer… and I know you don’t have the money to pay for one.”
Carmen sat down heavily on the bed, defeated.
“Lucía, that’s grown-up stuff. You don’t need to worry.
” “But if they want to separate me from you, of course I have to worry.”
Tears began to stream down Carmen’s face. For months she had fought alone against the divorce proceedings initiated by Roberto, her ex-husband…
