Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Friday said President Trump and Republican lawmakers have no interest in making “health care more affordable” as ObamaCare subsidies are set to expire, rising the monthly cost for millions.
“But right now, as I go around, especially as I’ve been talking to my seniors, they are so very concerned because the cost of rent is going up and it seems like their checks aren’t going up,” Crockett told host Chris Hayes on MS NOW.

“And people are really, really scared about what we know is about to happen as it relates to the health care cliff as well,” she continued.
“And it seems like this administration, the Republicans, are not interested in doing anything to make health care more affordable in this country.”
The Texas Democrat said she’s urged insured constituents to not “listen to the Democrats or the Republicans on this issue” and to call their health insurance providers about what new premiums could look like as those monthly prices go up.

Crockett said previously that she believes the government will shut down again after Jan. 30, when the current spending package — signed into law by Trump after a record 43-day shutdown — runs out and Congress needs to pass new legislation to keep the government open.
On Tuesday, the lawmaker said Republicans couldn’t “care less about doing what they’re supposed to do, which is to govern.”
After the government reopened in November, lawmakers failed to agree to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies set to expire at the end of 2025. Republicans have attempted to pass their own health care bill without addressing the expiring premiums, causing more room for worry.

There was one spark of optimism. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chair Bill Cassidy (R-La.) told The Hill this week that there’s the outline of a deal “to extend the enhanced premium tax credits for a period of time and to put in health savings accounts and give the enrollee the choice of which to take.”
More details needed to be ironed out, he said, but he added that “there’s potential for a deal there.”

Moderate GOP lawmakers in the House could also force a vote in early January that would extend the ACA tax credits.
Trump said last week that he could work with Democrats on health care. He later said he plans to meet with major insurance company executives to bring down consumer prices in response to rising health care subsidies in 2026. The meeting could be held in either Florida, where the president will spend the next week, or the White House in January.
“I’m going to call in the insurance companies that are making so much money, and they have to make less, a lot less,” the president said at an Oval Office announcement on drug prices last week.

“I’m going to see if they get their price down, to put it very bluntly.
And I think that is a very big statement.”
But he has already placed blame on Democrats before the shutdown deadline. Trump told rally-goers in North Carolina last week that Democrats “beholden” to health insurance companies will close the government.
