Mariana took a few steps back, her breath ragged and her hands trembling. Her mind raced, searching for a logical explanation, something that wouldn’t make her feel like she was living a nightmare.
But that voice…
That voice was not just any voice.
I had heard it before.
Many times.
Too many.
“No… it can’t be…” she whispered, bringing her hand to her mouth.
The knocking sounded again from inside the room.
“Help me, please!” the voice insisted, now with more desperation.
Mariana felt her legs give way. She leaned against the wall, trying not to fall. Her baby moved inside her womb, as if it too felt the fear that coursed through her body.
“Who’s there?” he asked, though deep down he already knew.
The silence lasted for what felt like an eternity.
And then…
“It’s me…” the voice replied. “Don’t leave me here…”
Mariana closed her eyes tightly.
It was him.
The man who had abandoned her.
The father of her child.
The same one who disappeared without a trace, leaving her alone at the most difficult moment of her life.
“What are you doing here?!” Mariana shouted, now with anger mixed with fear.
She tried to open the door, but the lock was firmly in place. She looked around desperately, searching for something to break it with, something that would help her understand what was happening.
“Get me out!” he shouted from inside. “Please, I don’t know what’s happening!”
Mariana took a step back, confused, trembling.
If he was there…
So…
Who was the man who had opened the door for him?
The air became heavy.
Overweight.
At that moment, the front door opened.
Mariana turned slowly.
There he was.
The ranch man.
The only one who ever loved her.
But he didn’t seem the same anymore.
Her gaze was cold. Empty. As if she had been carrying something dark inside for years.
“You shouldn’t have gone near that door,” he said in a calm but firm voice.
Mariana felt a chill.
“What’s going on?” she asked, almost voiceless. “Why is he there? Explain it to me!”
He looked at her silently for a few seconds.
And then, she let out a small laugh… but it wasn’t a laugh of joy.
It was bitter.
—Because there are things you don’t know, Mariana.
“Well, tell me!” she shouted. “I’m pregnant, alone, and now it turns out the father of my child is locked up in your house like an animal!”
The man lowered his gaze for a moment, as if he were hesitating.
But then he saw her again.
—That “father of your child”… —she said slowly— is not who you think he is.
Mariana felt her heart skip a beat.
-What are you taking about?
He took a step towards her.
—Did he tell you why he left?
—No… it disappeared…
“Of course he didn’t tell you,” he interrupted. “Because if he had… you would never have come here.”
Mariana shook her head.
—You’re lying…
“Do you really think someone just abandons someone like that? For no reason?” he said, moving closer. “Do you really think you were the victim in this whole story?”
Those words hit her hard.
—I… I didn’t do anything…
“No,” he replied. “Not you. But he did.”
The silence grew heavy again.
From the room, the blows returned.
“Don’t believe him!” shouted the voice from inside. “He’s crazy! Get me out of here!”
Mariana put her hands to her head.
“That’s enough!” he shouted. “I don’t understand anything!”
The ranch man sighed deeply.
“That man,” she said, pointing to the door, “isn’t the first time he’s abandoned someone. Nor the first time he’s cheated, lied… and destroyed lives.”
Mariana felt a lump in her throat.
-What do you mean?
He hesitated for a few seconds.
As if what he was about to say weighed too heavily.
“Years ago…” she began, “that same man came to this place. With another woman.”
Mariana opened her eyes, surprised.
-Other…?
“She was pregnant too,” he continued. “She also believed that he loved her.”
Mariana’s world began to shake.
-Not…
“He left her here,” he said, his voice breaking slightly. “He promised to come back… but he never did.”
—And what happened to her?
The man stared at her.
And in her eyes… there was pain.
A lot of pain.
-Died.
The silence was absolute.
Mariana felt the air disappear.
“She died waiting…” he continued. “Alone. Without help. Without anyone.”
Tears began to run down Mariana’s face.
—That… that can’t be true…
“I found her,” he said. “I was the one who buried her.”
Mariana felt like everything was spinning.
—And him?
“He came back months later… as if nothing had happened,” she replied, her voice thick with anger. “Asking about her. As if it were a game.”
From the room, the voice screamed desperately.
—He’s lying! Don’t believe him! Please!
But now Mariana didn’t know what to believe.
The ranch man looked at her intently.
—When I saw him… I knew I couldn’t let him do the same thing again.
Mariana took a step back.
—What did you do…?
He did not respond immediately.
He just looked at her.
And that look said it all.
“I locked him up,” he finally said. “So he can’t destroy another life.”
The silence was louder than any scream.
Mariana felt like her world was shattering into a thousand pieces.
Because now I understood everything.
Abandonment.
Silence.
The lie.
But I also understood something else.
That man…
He wasn’t who she thought he was.
And the other one…
He was not the savior she had imagined.
Two men.
Two truths.
And a decision that would change everything.
The baby started moving inside her again.
As if reminding her that she was no longer alone.
Mariana looked at the door.
Then she looked at the man in front of her.
And with tears in her eyes, she asked the most difficult question of her life:
—What am I supposed to do now…?
The man did not respond.
Because that decision…
It was no longer his.
It was hers.
And any choice…
It would have consequences.
Sometimes, life confronts us with truths that hurt more than lies…
And not all “saviors” are heroes, nor are all “guilty” people innocent.
If you were in Mariana’s place… would you open the door or leave it closed? Why?
