In the midst of her college years, Leavitt applied for an internship at the White House during Trump’s first term. Despite her young age and relatively limited political experience, she was selected for the role. This decision would prove to be a game-changer for her career. “I applied on the White House website, and they chose me. I couldn’t believe it,” she says with a smile.

During her internship, Leavitt gained invaluable experience, eventually securing a full-time position working in the press office under then-Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany. “Kayleigh became one of my closest mentors, and we are still very good friends to this day,” she says, recalling her early days in the White House press office.

The Congressional Run: A Tough Loss, But a Resilient Spirit

After her time at the White House, Leavitt returned to New Hampshire and ran for Congress. Her congressional campaign was highly competitive, with significant financial support pouring in from the D.C. establishment. Despite the odds, Leavitt won her primary, a significant achievement in itself. However, she ultimately lost the general election.

I learned so much about myself, the process, and how tough politics can be,” she says. I met incredible people, and the experience taught me so much about resilience and perseverance,” she adds.

She married her husband, who is 32 years her senior, in a relationship that many might find unconventional. “I met my husband during my congressional campaign. He’s my greatest supporter and best friend,” she says fondly. “He’s built a very successful business, and he’s been by my side through every step of this crazy journey.”

Leavitt’s husband, who is 59, has been fully supportive of her career in politics, even as they juggle their personal and professional lives. “I walked into his life, and it’s been a circus ever since, but he’s been amazing through it all,” she laughs.

The couple has a young son, Nicholas, who was born during the 2024 presidential campaign. Leavitt describes balancing her demanding career and motherhood as challenging but deeply rewarding. “Being a mother has given me so much perspective. My son doesn’t care about my job. He just wants me to come home and play with him,” she says. “It’s difficult, but I try to balance both and prioritize my time.”
